Sound of Hope: Empowering Healthcare Across Guatemala
In Guatemala’s clinics and mountain villages, many caregivers still work without the most basic tools — no blood pressure cuff, no otoscope, sometimes not even a stethoscope.
That’s changing, thanks to Eric Lamoray, who’s 3D-printing open-source medical tools with local partners and delivering them where they’re needed most.
A Simple Tool, a Big Difference
From busy city fire brigades to remote mountain clinics, Eric’s 3D-printed stethoscopes are transforming care:
-
Municipal Clinics: In El Estor, the first public clinic opened with only one BP cuff and one stethoscope. When Eric arrived with five stethoscopes, new diagnostic kits, and training, the whole town celebrated.
-
Fire and Rescue Squads: Seven metro-area and one rural Bomberos units now carry printed stethoscopes. Their only feedback? “Can you make them louder — the sirens drown them out!”
-
Mountain Villages: Teams travel rugged, one-lane dirt roads to reach clinics with little more than bandages and courage. Alongside local nurses, Eric’s group trains staff on how to use the new tools for lung screening and basic diagnosis.
Each delivery is a story of trust — outsiders welcomed into communities long wary of help, now opening their doors and hearts.
Why It Matters
These stethoscopes and kits help identify infections, heart and lung conditions, and complications that would otherwise go unseen. They’re made from a few dollars’ worth of plastic — but they build something priceless: connection, confidence, and care.
“So much good is coming from what to us is a handful of items,” Eric says.
“Improved public health care. A door of trust cracking open a little. Lines of communication beginning.”
